Top 5 Self Care Tips When Travelling for Business

I often travel for work, and this week I’m away from home for a week.  I don’t mind “getting away” from time to time, but it can take a toll on both my mind and body.  When my usual routine is disrupted, everything I usually do goes out the window, and I’m left feeling tired and fatigued.

I’ve listed below the things I do to maintain a healthy mind and body while I travel.

Top 5 Self Care Tips When Travelling for Business

1. Eat Well

Don’t fall into the trap of eating bad food, while you’re travelling.  It’s so easy to grab lunch on the run, and then when back in your room you order UberEats.  It can be very easy to overeat or undereat when travelling when for work, so be mindful of your eating habits.

2. Drink plenty of water

One of my biggest issues when I travel is that I forget to drink anything but coffee and diet coke.  Whether it’s my change in routine or working in a different location, drinking enough water goes to the bottom of my priority list.  Drinking enough water will help prevent headaches and a range of other ailments you don’t need while you’re away from home.

3. Remember to exercise

Most hotels have a gym, and if not go for a walk or find exercises on pinterest to do in your room.  Moving around will help stretch and relax both your mind and body, and can also help you sleep better.

4. Use the downtime to catch up on some “me time”

Being away from home can create a little “time” luxury.  You’re not in your own space, so generally don’t have as many household chores to do.  Use this time, to call an old friend, a diy facial or read a book.

5. Practice good bedtime behaviours

My sleep schedule is always disrupted when I travel – strange rooms, strange beds, not often but on occasion different time zones.

Practicing good bedtime behaviours means:

  • Stopping work at a reasonable time, don’t stay up working because you’re on your own and have nothing better to do.
  • Don’t sit up in bed watching the television all night because you’re having trouble going to sleep in a strange room.
  • Put down your phone (also for the reasons above).

Conclusion

With these tips, you’ll be looking forward to your next business trip away.  Just remember – different people will require different self care – be sure to listen to your body and know yourself and your needs.
